Say what you will, the keith & donna godchaux era (1971-1979) was, IMO, the last truly significant creative period in the grateful dead's long history. Yes, brent mydland was a more energetic player than keith, but that small gain is negated by many losses, chief of which were the marked deterioration of jerry's singing voice and, more importantly, the loss of his songwriting chops.
I watched to court footage of Bugliosi destroying Oswald and lemme tell ya that rotten little commie never stood a chance!
Unfortunately, Bugs and Giuliani have merged into the same person in my mind and their hair dye never stops running down their face.
You're doing the Lord's work reading that book. Please create an hilarious review if and when you finish that notable contribution to American legal history.
The run of shows at the end of Feb into March Fillmore 1969 that went into Live Dead. (The DATs available on the archive are amazing quality, you can hear the electrical current in the air during quiet parts - or maybe my stereo just has ground loop). Feb. 15, 1973 Dane County. Nov. 11, 1973 Winterland. P.N.E. 1966 fun early show (they announce the dead, nobody claps, Jerry says "I see our fame has preceded us."
FWIW here are 10 of my all-time fave dead shows: 11-2-69. family dog, SF 5-2-70. harpur college, binghamton, NY 11-8-70 capitol theater, port chester,NY 4-17-71 princeton university 8-27-72 old renaissance fairground, veneta,OR 3-28-73 civic center, springfield, MA 8-6-74 roosevelt stadium, jersey city, NJ 10-9-76 oakland stadium, oakland, CA 5-9-77 war memorial auditorium, buffalo, NY 7-8-78 red rocks amphitheatre, morrison, CO Let me know if you enjoyed any of these, gw
For some reason I never liked the way any of those Port Chester shows are recorded. The sound is just flat. Harpur is a good one. Oregon is awesome. China Rider, playing, and dark star are great. Another good one is the 1970 show at MIT.
Spotify has some really great recent Beach Boys releases. Smile sessions, Sunflower and 20/20 sessions, Wild Honey seasions. Outtakes feom Today, Summer Days.
Who gives a sh#t who jackie wants to invite to the funeral? How does that further inculpate Oswald or disprove anti warren commission conspiracy theories? No wonder this garbage is 1600 pages
Dan S - Jackie invited the mafia to Paramount studios where they did Roman Polanski trunk cocaine and had a Roman orgy beneath Lookout Mountain with Anton LeVay and Sadie Glutz when she was known as Sadie McQueen. Jolly West had an elephant sex show.
I was gonna take a pot shot at jerry west almost being there but i think you did already (jolly was a typo?) Anyway lol. Seriously is there anything as stupid as the death drive? If that didn't prove what a bunch of directionless morons the mansonoids are....
Jolly West is O'Neill's CIA boogyman. Tom has big fat Jolly shooting it out with Charlie at Cielo bang bang! Sorry had to sneak a little Cactus Jack into your Y-O Thanksgiving lol.
The death drive is as jive as all the turkeys in all the ovens right now.
What if? Getting Charles Denton Watson to tell the truth. About 10050 Cielo Drive Los Angeles California. On the night of August 8th 1969. Would you object to water boarding or similar torture to get this animal to tell the truth. Why were you there.
The true con. Was Mr Watson. It's so simple and easily dismissed and overlooked. Who's hands were on all those souls? Is this really all that difficult to get?
After 52 plus years of deflection and misdirection. The true bullshit artist Charles Denton Watson the true embodiment of callus murder Happily lives on. And you guys are still debating Charlie and his brain dead girls.
Look carefully at how this whole thing played out in 197⁰-1971. Tex the principle savage in these home invasion massacres was tried separately from Manson and the trio of girl's. WHY?
Unknown is just agitating. Charles Watson was as much a failure in his endeavours in '69 as Charlie was in crime. The only reason he was able to lead the killers is because Charlie told them to do whatever he said. Nothing he attempted on his own went off successfully, with no blowback. If there were crime league tables, he'd be in one of those Jules Verne leagues ~ 20 000 leagues beneath the sea ! 😆
He was ten years older, indoctrinated in mind control techniques and flourished on the flower power love for music. He was also a pimp before so he had techniques for his stable that the noobs from the middle class were completely ignorant of
unknown is probably wrong but his statements are worth some thought
They are. They have been given that thought for half a century and more.
Charlie grew up in and out of incarceration and didn't have a record of leadership in the institutions where he was locked up. Of the three Charles Manson seems to have been the last in line to lead anything
I work with kids. Have done so since 1983. I've seen loads of them at many stages of development. Some are the same from babyhood. Some get more confident, some less. Point is, there is such a massive scope of change that any human being can go through. That Charlie may have been a wimp with his own age mates for 32 years, in no way discounts what he would have been with those 10 years and more, younger, many in or just out of their teens, all, countercultural, so looking to fight back against their upbringings and all, willing to expand their minds with various drugs ~ not to mention the kind of respect they would have accorded a pretty charismatic guy that had spent much of his life in jail. The only time anyone followed Tex was when Charlie told them to. He wasn't remotely in the same class, savvy-wise, charisma-wise or power-wise.
"Point is, there is such a massive scope of change that any human being can go through."
So much this. We try to assign such concise explanations to everyone involved in the Manson crew but more and more I just think some people's choose your own adventure book goes completely off the rails.
Dan, It just occurred to me that Charlie's henchmen and henchwomen got into trouble after they violated one of the great slogans of the sixties. They trusted someone over 30.
2/15/73.

ReplyDeleteAmen, Sixties. I was just listening to Donna and Keith's last show with the band. Truly a banger as the kids say today.
ReplyDeleteDisagree. They were creating great new music right up until Jerbear’s passing. So many great tunes that never made it to the studio.
ReplyDeleteI've grown to like Donna. And I agree with sixties, '78 and done IMO.
ReplyDeleteI just started bugs's jfk book. Page 4 i already have a major problem: he uses "aggravate" when he should have used"irritate".

Dead fans - Any suggestions for classic shows online that I can listen to over the holiday weekend? Thank you in advance.

ReplyDeleteThank you, guys. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating. Doug, we have room for you although I fear Ohio might be a bit of a drive for you.

ReplyDeleteHas anyone here listened to the Dead and Gone podcast?...if so I would appreciate your thoughts ...
ReplyDeleteOnce I was watching acoustic Hot Tuna at Sweetwater when Weir and Sammy Hagar came in to enjoy the show.
ReplyDeleteAnother time I was at Terrapin Station (RIP) seeing Kiefer Sutherland with his band in the bar. Both Lesh and Hagar were there to see that one too.
Sammy is the unifying force!
Caught the Sebring documentary tonight on Tubi.

Is this request unreasonable considering the overall picture.
DeleteAll seven individuals August 8th and 9th 1969.
DeleteAsk Charles Denton Watson?
What were you doing?
And why were you doing it?
All the answers lay within him.

What if Tex really was the boss?
ReplyDeleteThen what?
It's a major collapse of the narrative.
Can't have that can we boys and girls
ReplyDeleteLook carefully at how this whole thing played out in 197⁰-1971.
Tex the principle savage in these home invasion massacres was tried separately from Manson and the trio of girl's.
WHY?
And
ReplyDeleteThey still get to blame Charlie Manson
For all there troubles.
Wasn't Tex tried separately because he fought extradition?
ReplyDeleteUnknown is just agitating. Charles Watson was as much a failure in his endeavours in '69 as Charlie was in crime. The only reason he was able to lead the killers is because Charlie told them to do whatever he said.

I think unknown is probably wrong but his statements are worth some thought.
ReplyDeleteIf my sources are correct:
Paul Watkins was class president in all his high school classes, and student body president the year he dropped out of school.
Tex was an honor student, captain of the football team, editor of the school paper,
Charlie grew up in and out of incarceration and didn't have a record of leadership in the institutions where he was locked up.
