Raw Footage of Manson

This is some raw footage from television station KCRA out of Sacramento.  It's a bit of a hodgepodge with audio in some of the clips and no audio in other spots.  It's not at all chronological and there is even a clip of Squeaky after she was arrested for her assassination attempt on President Ford along with a clip of Sandy and Susan Murphy exiting a police van at the time they were picked up for questioning in Sacramento.

Most of the clips do relate to Manson though.  There is some footage taken after one of Manson's parole hearings and the video ends with a short interview of Manson while in his jail cell on death row at San Quentin.

One of the most interesting parts to me was in the beginning where the yard at the Tate home was filmed.  I don't think I have ever seen film footage, just stills.

I am not sure but sounds like an appointed psychiatrist

  3. That group of interviews appears to be about a recent parole hearing. Charlie's first parole hearing was in 1978 according to the available transcripts. This is confirmed by the size of that guys shirt collar.

  4. Matthew, a court appointed psychiatrist would be my guess, too.

Peter, I was thinking it might have been his first parole hearing because so many news people showed up for it and there was kind of a carnival vibe to it. As time and the the parole hearings for Charlie went on there was less interest and excitement.

There is really no way to tell though.

  5. He talks first-hand which would mean he was in the parole hearing. There is no psychologist listed as an attendee on either the the 1978 or 1979 transcript. He would have to be either a Board Member, or maybe one of the reporters that was at the hearing being interviewed by other reporters who were not.

  6. There must be stuff like this all over California. Someone should go collect copies of it all. I got some stuff like this from Brett that originated at UCLA. Maybe someday I'll travel around California copying it and then go out to wherever Ed Sanders materials are kept. I know it is all at some University on the East Coast. That's my idea of a fun vacation.

  7. The art of being a con man includes the ability to plant ideas into another person's mind and lead the other person to believe the idea originated with them in the first place. The conversation Charlie has near the end of the tape is the sound of a con man trying to do his thing with the reporter. You can hear him talking all around the answers to the questions he is asked, picking the brain of the reporter, trying to find a place of leverage. Kudos to the man with the microphone for not falling into Charlie's game.

Any idea what might be indicated when Charlie constantly stroked his own beard? I did a google search and one article said, "The beard is a sign of wisdom, and by stroking it or smoothing your mustache you draw even more attention to that mark of manhood and maturity. It sends a signal that you’re thoughtful and deliberate, and probably even sends signals to your brain to keep yourself cool and rational in tense situations." Any other thoughts about this?

    1. Based on counter interrogation training I’ve received, I was told that playing with ones face during questioning signals that you’re hiding something- that you’re trying to subconsciously hide your face while being deceptive. This isn’t my opinion as to why Charlie is playing with his beard, it’s what I’ve been taught by professional interrogators.

  9. @ AstroCreep sayd: Anyone know the significance of the 3 fingers being held up by Sandra Good?

I noticed the 3 fingers too in a Video somewhere sometime where Manson is walking through the Hallway to Courtroom in LA. He clearly has 3 fingers sticking out while holding his papers.... Then there is a Photo of Krenwinkel somewhere ...where she does the same sign.... I just dont know what it means , But now you brought this up , it just popped my Mind ..

  10. About the three fingers.....

Read this post by Austin Ann and the comments that follow. It's open to interpretation but some of the suggestions are credible.

  12. Apologies on two fronts here, as I post the following link..

    1. That it is somewhat related to the original post, but...more random (yet interesting)

    2. If it has been posted previously, me bad. It is a "revised" version...so, if posted before, possibly some content is new.

From Jason Freeman's blog - some personal letters from HIS father (Jay) concerning HIS father (CM) and, the relationships that were/weren't

  16. I think the only good part about that shit movie was when Steven parent, in a dream sequence, beats Tex up with a shovel. We bust out laughing

  17. Wasn't the three finger gesture adopted by the Weather Underground as something of a high sign following Bernadette Dohrm's comments about the TLB murders? If so, wouldn't the timing of this have been immediately after the killings and before anyone was arraigned? In other words, is it possible Manson and his followers co-opted the three finger high sign after seeing and hearing the Weather Underground declaring 1969 as "the year of the fork" and thought the sign was, for lack of a better term...far out?

  18. I watched The Haunting of Sharon Tate, and had little expectations. The movie show what would have happened if the victims fought back. The movie left me thinking so many "what if's", and more than any other related movie I've seen,it showed the sheer terror of the victims. So much so that I had to turn away at times. The cast was weird, but the idea was interesting. If you want to nitpick the facts, the movie isn't for you. But if you want to see an alternative, I *almost* recommend it. It was interesting to see the tables turned.

  19. It seems like it could have been an interesting concept but not sticking to the facts since it is a factual event, would ruin it for me. I noticed in the trailer that the word "PIG" was written on the glass of a window. No excuse for such well know facts of the crime. "what if" the killers wrote on the window instead of the door makes no sense. Will skip this one

Offhand, I believe Dohrn made her Manson fork comments at the infamous 12/26/1969-12/31/1969 "War Council" (aka the wargasm) meeting in Flint, Michigan. That is about 20+ days after Manson made the front pages upon being charged.

Minor point: At the time, WU was still known as simply Weatherman.

A little-known book called "Armed Love" tells the story of a couple of NYC "radicals" traveling west in late 1969. They are visiting communes and whatnot in early December 1969 when the Manson story broke. At that time, from the early news reports, they considered Manson a revolutionary "like Castro in the hills before the Revolution," etc. Just as Jerry Rubin visited Manson in prison in early 1970 (as I recall), believing him to be a persecuted revolutionary or framed hippie or something. Between Weatherman and the guys in "Armed Love," it just shows how far astray the American political counterculture had strayed by late 1969.

  21. I'm watching "Going Clear - Scientology and the Prison of Belief" and, a 1968 interview with LRH which I'd forgotten about is included (see link below) where LRH speaks to state of mind very much as CM would during the same time frame

    https://youtu.be/qwBtlEegl-0

"The one man in the world who never believes he's mad is the madman.”

You really can see the LRH in CM. Then, of course, you have the connections to the OTO, Parsons, Crowley, Book of the Dead, K Anger, etc...

The Scientology doc is really good!

Here's a link to the full doc on YouTube
