I can't wait to see this movie. I have already started to look at flights and rooms for the week of the release. I am still holding out only to see if I can time it to run into my friends here at this blog 😀
I was just back in Hollywood at the end of July. I took an old high school friend. We went to El Coyote and I still can't believe that place survives as it is the worst Mexican food I have ever had lol
True story- our favorite movie growing up as kids in NJ was Bad News Bears which was filmed in Chatsworth. We went to the field where they shot the movie and on the way back into Hollywood I took him down Santa Susana Pass to see where the ranch was. We pulled up the the side of the road where a few years ago Stoner Van Houten led us down a path to the Back of the ranch where the cave was. My friend asked me to take him down there but he had shorts and flip flops on and I told him I coul never find it safely without Stoner or help...
Later that afternoon at the pool bar I was posting pics on FB and I noticed a post from Patty. When we were there- Stoner and Patty were down below about 150 yards away lol. Small world!
Hope all is well and to see a few of you next summer. This might not be accurate or revealing but I think it could still be a very good movie and personally- I can't wait 🍻
No sure whose role Margaret Qualley (daughter of Andie MacDowell) is cast in, as the hairy-pitted hippie hitchhiker girl, but she bears a striking resemblance to Ruth Ann Morehouse.
There’s a pic of her in the car with Brad Pitt- I imagine there’s some sliver of truth in that she’s what lures him to the ranch- kind of a spin off of the Dennis Wilson story. Who knows- I just found the pictures, clothing, and sets to be very cool.
To my eye, the actors look more like the original characters than those in any Manson movie I've seen. I still can't get over the one that had a blond Tex.
I scrolled down the photos and saw image #11. To me maybe showing the killers approach the house and then switch to what the 'neighbor' heard made some sense combined with showing the aftermath. After all the real image is on the web.
Then I went to #12. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm not sure I want to watch a very pregnant (obviously) Sharon Tate murdered in Tarantino glory (gory), especially if the murders are the back drop for some end of the sixties, Joan Didion's White Album concept. Even if he doesn't 'show' the 'shabby stabby' I'm not sure I want to see her last terrified moments.
No, I'm not one who is repulsed by violence in films. In fact, depending on what the director is trying to tell us I believe it is necessary at times. But I have to ask 'why?' in this case, aside from selling tickets. This isn't some fictional soldiers storming Omaha Beach. It is not a guy in a hockey mask slashing up teenagers who take off their cloths. It is not a fictional mob guy being blown away at a toll booth or even the climax scene of Bonnie and Clyde where the 'bad guys' get their comeuppance.
It is real, innocent victims who were horrifically murdered in a few terrifying moments. I'm not sure I need to see that.
Yes, I will go see it and hopefully meet Saint in LA but I'm not sure where I stand with image #12.
"I still can't get over the one that had a blond Tex."
It irked me when I seen the one movie where the actress that played Patricia KATIE Krenwinkel had bangs and I believe 2 ponytails, during the whole movie. She looked NOTHING like the real KATIE!
Buzzkill II -- I personally don't think I could enjoy a reenactment of the MF, feel I know too much about them already and their characters via other sources, especially RH's documentaries. And then Tarantino -- not a historian and usually combines humor with horror. I just don't know what I'll do when it comes out but maybe I'll just listen to some of you oo-ee-oo about it ;-)
Another thing, since I'm a movie fan, is it's very rare for a film to capture the real essence of a time period or era unless it's made during that time. Great capture example is "Blow Up". Otherwise what you get is passable sets, almost accurate costumes with 21st century dialogue and really bad, stereotype hairstyles. But I'm sure that's not what Tarantino will be driving at anyway.
"To my eye, the actors look more like the original characters than those in any Manson movie I've seen"
It's interesting how people's perceptions are different. I respect those differences, but that said I barely see any resemblance in most them, just as I never have in any of the past "Manson" movies that imo were so sensationalist, inaccurate and off-target.
I want the film to be good and maybe I'll change my mind seeing them in action in the film.
Sorry for the cynicism but I have my doubts any casting agent/director will ever come close to getting it right.
Ref some incorrect pics- YES. I passed these along to Matt while creeping along on the Long Island Expressway Hahahaha and included some by accident went I sent to Matt-
In regards to time period movies- I’d agree with above minus a few exceptions. I tend to think this movie (from what’s already been discussed and is written online) is set during that time, but not telling a story about that time. It gives the director/writer some flexible creativity and that’s where and how I think the movie will play out- meaning, it’s not a movie about Manson and the family, it’s about two guys who run in some of the same circles.
I think the movie Zodiac did a great job of this- time period but director/writer had some flexibility- and the movie wasn’t about the accuracy of the killings (although it was) but rather Robert Graysmith who was a cartoonist for the San Fran Chronicle-
Best line from graysmith's book is when they're searching the suspect's house and they move a couch and "again, several large, unclean dildoes roll out." They left THAT out of the movie. Sorry to be so gross but I'll never forget that, especially the "again" and "unclean" parts. Hard to believe dude isn't the one (Allen i believe his name was). Zodiac watch and telling his friend about it before the murders and being pulled over with a bloody knife in Vallejo the night of the murders and having bomb materials like the plan he sent to the chronicle and being in the right place for the bates murder. Graysmith lays out a great case but i believe it turns out the dna doesn't match a letter (probably got some one else to lick the envelope). Wait, which way is the Zodiac blog? And when QT makes the movie will he cast the right dildo?
kraut_iznota_knotsy, You're right we all see people differently. I always wonder why some contributors think the prettiest girls were the ones who I consider the least attractive and vice versa. Several years back, I devoted a chunk of time to watching every Manson Family related movie I could find on NetFlix DVDs. There was one, can't remember the name, where different actors played the same character, and even one of the opposite sex. I believe there was an actor who played more than role too. That was the movie where I had to content myself with trying to figure out who was who.
What about the short film i think it's called Pretty Face about the girls chasing their horse and they find it at Spahn? Charlie's a little dumpy but there's a good feel for the family in it. Off topic i just found an early edition dune buggy attack squadron and Manson files at open library to read for free!
The white bus story by charlie is something else. The spiral staircase house must ve been the ultimate pinnacle of his freedom ( I'm not expressing it exactly right but the gist of my meaning is there). He wrote that squeaky could corroborate the melting and reforming by voice command biker story; does she mention such a thing in her memoir? It falls in the pre murders time frame...
I honestly think this is going to be a lame film. Brad Pitt and DiCaprio as the lead? I just don't waste my time on these mass-production tripes anymore.
It's going to be a Tarantino film, and I would hesitate to call films like Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs'lame'. I also think that both Brad Pitt and Di Caprio, with the right director, can put in a good performance (although with a lesser director it's another matter). Heavens, Tarnatino even got a decent performance out of Travolta in Pulp Fiction.
I just don't waste my time on these mass-production tripes anymore.
Well, sober gustos .... as they say in Spanish, but this does seem something of a generalisation ...
I don't think it'll be lame at all. Huge budget, great cast, talented director. I think the thing that will disappoint is that this is not a movie completely about the murders. The murders are just a part of the film. The YouTube footage of Tarantino filming on Sunset Blvd is pretty cool.
I can't wait to see this movie. I have already started to look at flights and rooms for the week of the release. I am still holding out only to see if I can time it to run into my friends here at this blog 😀

DeleteEl Coyote truly does have awful food. I try and go there everytime I'm back in LA. Their scratch margaritas are lethal, tho!
DeleteCan't wait too.
ReplyDeleteThere are some other pics too, and some short videos but looks really cool so far- I’ll keep sending pics to Matt as others pop up.
ReplyDeleteNew pics added...

ReplyDeleteAC- The pix are way cool....looks like QT's doing a killer job at recreating the era. Thanks for finding them.

#12 - this is the photo from American Horror Story. Doesn't alter your feelings (nor should it) but...not from QT film
DeleteNever seem that pic of Charlie before. When and where's that from?

ReplyDeleteThank you, given the post I assumed it was. And 'no' it doesn't alter my feelings but I am more hopeful. Thank you for the clarification..
