Charles Manson hospitalized in Bakersfield; severity of illness unclear

Authorities confirmed Wednesday that mass murderer Charles Manson is back in a Bakersfield hospital, though the severity of his condition is unclear.

Kern County Sheriff's Lt. Bill Smallwood confirms that Manson is at a local hospital but could not say more.

Vicky Waters, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, declined to comment, citing federal and state medical privacy laws that preclude the agency "from commenting on protected health information for any inmate in our custody."

Waters did confirm, however, that Manson is alive.

In January, Manson, 83, was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield for what authorities at the time would describe only as a serious medical problem.

Manson and members of his "family" of followers were convicted of killing actress Sharon Tate and six other people during a bloody rampage in the Los Angeles area in August 1969. Prosecutors said Manson and his followers were trying to incite a race war he dubbed "Helter Skelter," taken from the Beatles song of the same name.

Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski, was 8 1/2 months pregnant when she was killed at her hilltop home in Benedict Canyon on Aug. 9, 1969. Four others were stabbed and shot to death the same night: Jay Sebring, 35; Voytek Frykowski, 32; Abigail Folger, 25, a coffee heiress; and Steven Parent, 18, a friend of Tate's caretaker. The word "pig" was written on the front door in blood.

The next night, Manson rode with his followers to the Los Feliz home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, then left three members to kill the couple.

Manson was initially sentenced to death. But a 1972 ruling by the California Supreme Court found the state's death penalty law at the time unconstitutional, and his sentenced was changed to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He has been denied parole 12 times.

During his four decades of incarceration, Manson has been anything but a model prisoner. Among other things, he has been cited for assault, repeated possession of a weapon, threatening staff and possessing a cellphone.

Identifying him as "mass murderer" like so many of these articles do, gives Charlie far more credit than he deserves.

Anyone know who's responsible for his estate, or who he has listed as Next of Kin? I'm genuinely curious what's going to happen re his funeral arrangements and whatever belongings he has. If he's afforded any kind of funeral ceremony then there's no doubt in my mind it'll become a media circus.

I do wonder what his last words will be. I don't know why I do. Will he leave us one final allegory?

Leno LaBianca was a U.S. Army veteran, so I'm sure he was somewhat of a tough guy. I'd like to think he and Charlie might meet up somewhere in the afterlife, sans weapons. Score-settlin' time.

Macy, I think that ended a couple of years ago. I think she still keeps mansondirect.com updated. If anyone knows better, feel free to correct me.

When an inmate dies the sentence being served is (obviously) terminated at death. Manson then will no longer be an inmate and neither the state nor the prison has any lawful claim to the body.

Per the CDCR regulations the Warden is to attempt to contact next of kin if Manson identified such a person in a form he was to update annually. The CDCR even sets out what the Warden is to say:

“I regret to inform you of the death of your (relationship), name, and date. Remains have been released to (name of contracting mortuary, address and phone number of mortuary). They are awaiting further instructions for the final disposition of your (relationship) without expense to the State. If not claimed within 48 hours, disposition must be made as provided by law. Please notify (contract mortuary) whether you will claim the body. You may contact the County Coroner’s Office at (Area Code) XXX-XXXX if you have questions regarding the cause of death of your (relationship). We extend our sympathy in your loss.”

If no one claims the remains or if the designated ‘next of kin’ decline to accept the remains, Manson will be interred by Kings County and his ‘estate’ will pay for it. If his estate is insufficient to pay (about $700) he will receive an indigent interment. California Health and Safety Code section 7104.

That means Manson will be cremated at the direction of the county coroner and stored at the coroner’s office until his remains can be interred in a county cemetery. This occurs on average about once every two years since an interment for one individual is not cost effective. There will be no ceremony. There will be no identifying headstone, only a year, with record of those interred retained in the county vital statistics.

If he has a will his estate, if any, will be distributed pursuant to his will. If not, there are statutes that determine what happens to his estate. If no 'heir' can be identified (from a very long list of possibilities) there are procedures that determine what happens. Put simply his personal effects will be sold at auction and added to his estate. After a period of time the money will go to the State of California.

Correction: "Kern County" if he dies in Bakersfield. Corcoran is in Kings County.

If this is really it - I will have my final say in the form of a final post I would like to write summing up my feelings about Manson, this case, this blog and the community of poeple I have come to know in it...

But for now I would say to George and the others who come here whom support and like Charlie....

I'm sorry. This must be a very hard time and I hope you find peace and comfort through this very trying period. I know he meant a lot to some of you and it's never easy to go through something like this....

Matt and Macy,

re: Star

I was speaking to someone in another group yesterday and asked. This is the reply I received:

"I knew her when I lived in Corcoran. When her marriage ploy backfired I had already moved away but a couple of my friends who still live in town said that they don't see Star anywhere anymore. Idk if she went back to the Midwest or what."

Patty is Dead said...

There was a rumor that she shacked up with Vincent Gallo the actor

Matt said...

I was informed today that updating of mansondirect.com is no longer done by Star but by “Redwolf”. The same reader also says that Greywolf will be the recipient of his possessions upon Manson’s eventual passing.

Take that for what it’s worth.

This was posted in a FB group:

From someone who claims to know. I can't vouch for the truth of it, but interesting if true.

"I’ve communicated with Charlie for a few years now and am close with a few of his Corcoran friends.

He IS on his way out.
Probably won’t make it through the weekend.

He has NOT died yet.

When I get the phone call, I’ll update you guys here.
I won’t be on the list of the first people to notify so I’ll probably get the news the night of or morning after.

He’s being kept comfortable and as far as I know isn’t even in shackles because he’s so weak.

Years and years of drug abuse and taking substances that weren’t researched enough, random lab drugs and the like have just mangled his entire digestive system. He’s been living with severe Crohn’s disease for a majority of his life now and it’s all catching up to him.
I’m told he weighs barely 100lbs and is virtually catatonic.

He was awake and responsive enough to watch Evan Peters’ portrayal of him on American Horror Story a few weeks ago while he was in the hospital though. I’m told he wasn’t pleased hahahaha"

From a recent article about the Tarentino movie:

Details on the movie are sparse — initially, the studios themselves had to read the script at the offices of WME, which reps Tarantino — but it’s said to be plotted similarly to Inglourious Basterds. Deadline reports that Tarantino has met with all your 1990s crushes — Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio — for the two lead male roles in the ensemble, and wants Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate.

Chuck's imminent demise will be reported in the mainstream media when it happens, not before, and it can't come too soon for this carbuncle on society. And I don't understand why the 'authorities' feel the need to keep his affairs private. He is a public prisoner and all matters pertaining to him should be public also. After all, the public has paid for it.

I fail to follow this reasoning. In a penal code It is surely what people do or fail to do that they are punished for, not other people's shifting perception of it. Are you saying that we should condone CM's actions because he had a tough upbringing? Or that we should reduce his 'punishment' after the event because we now understand better circumstances that might mitigate his personal responsibility? Millions of people in this world have had a harder childhood than CM and have suffered far more, without becoming pimps, child rapists, drug dealers, etc. If society is to hold together surely all must be judged with the same yardstick? If CM got hit about when young, well that's sad, but it's still not ok for him to beat the crap out of Dianne Lake. Etc. Let us not confuse understanding with forgiving; it may have become clearer why someone performs an act but it doesn't make the act itself any more acceptable..

A new LA Times article which pretty much says why there is so little information. But the bottom line is that Manson is still alive.

http://www.latimes.com/la-me-charles-manson-health-20171119-htmlstory.html

For all we know he could have left the hospital after tests and is back in the prison. The prison does not routinely send prisoners to the hospital to die. They actually have their own hospice care program where certain prisoners are trained to give hospice care to the inmates.

Serial killer Ed Kemper is one such prisoner that has been trained for hospice care, he is at the prison in Vacaville where Bobby is housed.

We may not know that Charlie has died until days after the fact.

Anonymous said...

This is certainly cruelly stressful for us to keep looking to see if he's died or not and not finding any information at all. What about the public's right to know?

What do you actually mean by that William ?
For me, I see that there are a series of people that cannot escape {or if dead, could not escape} a certain amount of responsibility for the role they played in the life of Charles Manson and the outcome of some of his actions. If you're some kind of warden that's in charge of young offenders and you instigate or deliberately allow the rape or ill treatment of one of your charges, if you take the view that you're going to make "the criminal scum suffer" and "teach them a lesson" or similar, then if they go on to do some horrific things that demonstrate little or no caring for other people, there's a degree to which you are culpable.
However, an abysmal upbringing or background can never justify what Charlie did even before he was involved in murder. It helps explain some of it, it makes it understandable, but the fact will always remain that Charlie made his choices.
You know, not everyone is actually taught or shown by example how to make the right choices. But we all know, just by how we'd react to things done to us, what the wrong choices are. The interesting thing about Charlie Manson is that despite dancing around the English language and HS, he doesn't deny being a criminal. In fact he sometimes comes across like wearing it and its attendant packages as a badge of sorts.
I'm curious as to what you mean because there's a difference between being pro someone while detesting what they've done and being pro someone including what they've done and pro someone regardless what they've done.
