Here is the paragraph pertaining to this item:
CHARLES MANSON (b. 1934) Drifter whose "family" committed the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. An outstanding, unique Manson relic, a dreadnought-style acoustic guitar owned and used by Manson at the Barker Ranch and seized by police following the killer's arrest. The guitar, 39" x 14 1/2", is a model ACL-IM manufactured in Japan by Camco. Manson has carved his surname into the top of the headstock. Attached to a tuning peg is a pair of property labels from the Inyo County, California Sherriff's Department, with one indicating that the guitar was seized from the Barker Ranch in Death Valley on October 12, 1969, the day of the raid on the ranch which resulted in the capture of Manson and his "family". The tag further notes that on Dec. 11, the guitar was transferred to the custody of LAPD detective Michael McGann, who investigated the assassination Robert F. Kennedy before becoming the lead detective working on the Tate murders. Before his capture, Manson had been an aspiring folk musician and in an effort to promote his career, he befriended Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson in 1968. This guitar was undoubtedly used by Manson to compose, practice, and likely record his music, as well as to entertain his 'Family' members at the Barker Ranch. Many speculate that the real target of Manson's rage was record producer Terry Melcher, who had refused to sign Manson and had earlier rented the home occupied by Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. The guitar is unstrung, and shows small nicks, chips, dents, and scratches throughout, else very good.

They'll never get that much for it
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see its provenance.
ReplyDeleteThey found it behind the sofa.
DeleteIf it is what it is, then a pre-lawsuit laminate reproduction guitar usually of above average construction quality but inferior sound to that it's trying to copy. This is generally speaking because it all gets quite involved and complex back then. There was one sold by Goodwill in 2013 with a carrying case for around $12 (without Manson's engraved name of course).
ReplyDeleteValue to extreme Manson freaks about right. To some of us with a passing interest, drop a zero and then some. To the average person on the street drop two zeros and then watch them trade it for a good used bicycle.
Or a bag of weed.
DeleteExcept that it's complete bullshit.
ReplyDeleteHave you talked to the auction house George? Im curious what paperwork they have on this. According to the tag, Inyo County released this to LAPD..but then what? Unless it was stolen at some point there would be paperwork from LAPD releasing it. McGann died a few years ago. I wonder if he had kept it.
ReplyDeleteAs a guitar, it's crap.
ReplyDeleteCielo,
ReplyDeleteGood question: seems it either never was booked into evidence by LAPD or someone took a souvenir.
I thought Charlie's acoustic guitar was a Martin. The "Man Son" thing also looks phony.
ReplyDeleteSo, this item is not really a Manson guitar?
ReplyDeleteAnyone have the police report from the raid? It might be listed.
ReplyDeleteWhy would it be taken into evidence? Evidence of what? Manson wasn't suspected of Grand Theft Guitar.
ReplyDeleteSuspicion of shit singing.

ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDeleteOther hot Manson deals :
Charles Manson prison tissue paper $495.00
Charles Manson unfinished bag of Reeses pieces from prison visit 2002 $750.00
Charles Manson unfinished burrito from prison visit $995.00
Not a burrito but an unfinished burrito. Laughed my ass off. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI'd guess it was confiscated in a raid and whomever handled the inventory wrote 'Manson" on the top of the fret head using some type of white grease pencil as a helpful identifier for the record. It may not be Manson's in particular, just was there at raid time. Presumably the raid was at Barker's. Since it was seemingly never claimed afterward, there it sat and then got passed around. Like I said, just guessing ;-)
ReplyDeleteHOW TO MAKE A PRISON BURRITO

-----------------------------
As far as I know the full police report has never been released but I do have a copy of Manson's property report for the Barker arrest. The only property listed for Charlie is $1.00. Matt used the report at the bottom of this post-

Thanks for the Prison Burrito video that was very enlightening Matt can't believe it tastes anything close to good. wincing.
ReplyDeleteMcGann stole all sorts of case stuff: files, photos, etc. At some point he gave it to Earl Deemer for safekeeping. Supposedly he was going to "write a book". The late Bill Nelson (yeah, I know...) got alot of his case materials from this stash. Dunno if the guitar is authentic, but McGann had a serious lack of ethics. If it is authentic, I wonder why there would be no strings?!
ReplyDeleteI would have paid for McGann's stash, for sure. Supposedly he asked Deemer to give it all back after he heard Nelson had gotten wind of it/access to it. Presumably McGann's heirs would have that stash, which was also said to include a copy made of the Roman/Sharon bedroom tape.
Hmmm... Just read the comments. If someone *cough* ate half a bag of Reese's Pieces & then listed it for sale as half-eaten by Manson, for the bargain price of $500., would it be wrong? Asking for a friend.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you that having owned 3 of Charlies guitars from Corcoran, and having sold 2 of them, they will not have any problem selling it for 10k. The only problem is that it is based on someone's word with no actual proof. I do not personally believe this is Charlies guitar as it was NOT declaimed in the list of property taken at the time. I also find it very hard to believe that Charlie would carve his name into the headstock of a guitar, exactly as they do at Corcoran. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck!'
ReplyDeleteIn the book "Desert Shadows", Bob Murphy says that while transporting Charlie from Barkers, he asked if he could make a stop to pick up a "pack" that included his guitar. The rangers said no but later on one of them came back to see what had been at Barkers in the daylight and found the guitar and other items. Whether this is the actual guitar is anyone's guess and everyone's opinion.
ReplyDeleteLike most I'm skeptical but I don't care either way.
