Finding the Manson Cave on a Private Los Angeles Tour

My guests from Adelaide (Australia) had something a bit different at the top of their wish list for their custom private Los Angeles tour: they wanted to visit the remains of the old Spahn Movie Ranch in the Santa Susana Pass (near Chatsworth).

Thanks Stoner for Sharing!
(Stoner is the one who left the photo described in the article. LOL.)

  3. Where are those rattlesnakes when you need 'em?

  4. I wish people would respect the land out there. I have seen photos of places on Spahns where people were spray painting Manson stuff all over the place. All it takes are people in numbers to ruin something. I don't know what compels individuals to trash up private property. I would not be advocating people to go out there, especially if I was a tour guide. I see a lawsuit in the near future. Someone will get hurt, bitten by a snake, or fall down a damn ravine, or worse yet, encounter Africanized bees nesting in those old junk cars. I should know about trespassers. Been fighting them off our property for years. I know people are curious, but just saying....

  5. I bet the rattlesnakes turned away in disgust. LOL.

On that day the girls were not heard singing, I'm sure.

  7. How do you trespass on the state park? Aren't there rattlesnakes and bees at most parks around there? Spahn Ranch is a state park and open to the public.

  9. Josh, who is golf cart guy? Why does he try to run people off?

  10. See the ghost of Gene Autry nearby?

fyi: There's been a few recent documentaries on cable about the Vril - underground hole (which CM was searching for) which contains gold, silver and the superior race.

  12. You should check out Jim Morrison's Hotel Room in Hollywood if you're a Doors fan. Used to be able to reserve it overnight for a small amount.

That's where the band found him naked at the front door and holding a massive empty acid blotter when he failed to show up at a gig one night.

(Oh, and Morrison was a client of Jay Sebring.)

  13. Golf Cart guy is Ray. He says he owns the back part, which is debatable. He's never pressed charges but always threatens. Where the movie ranch was is a state park. Ray is a nut. Hes showed up at Michael's door twice.

  14. Josh, how does that church figure into it? I've heard that they give visitors grief, too.

We didn't encounter anyone during the times we visited but others have.

  16. My copy of Guinn's book arrived today as well. I've zipped through 76 pages so far.

Guinn's organization & research are very good. He goes into detail of CM's childhood in more depth than I have ever read. Nothing earth shattering so far but what he has covered so far punctuates what I already understood about him.

  19. @Deb and William: whose gonna write a review?

  20. Deb, mine arrived today from Amazon and I just ordered it yesterday. Guess preordering helps no one but the author.

  21. @Patty by the time I get my copy everyone else who ordered the book will have already read theirs!!! So, probably not me.

@Cindy Lou, well, no offence, that just sucks!! I guess Amazon is going backwards in sending out the books...... last one ordered, first one out.

  22. Wow Debs that sucks but I would suggest sending an email complaint to Amazon about this I had an issue with them on time on a mistake with an order and they added funds to my account towards next order there customer service is 1st Rate
Matt I've also read about 80 pages so far and I'm very happy with it definitely one of the better MANSON books so far

  27. Here’s something timely to ponder:

    Cause of death ?

Hard to imagine this was released after the latest discussions on LSD, mushrooms, pot, booze, and the unforgiving hand of Mother Nature regarding Ron Hughes. But these are the sort of reports which I find vexing since they typically grope for a singular cause, when this again illustrates (to me anyway), that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Was it the hooch or the shrooms? Although no one has died from an OD on certain things, they may have died while stumbling off a cliff while experiencing them. Of course the autopsy report will list the cause of death as multiple blunt force trauma; resulting from rapid deceleration.

What I see is an amalgam of ‘acceptable risks’, where the curve goes exponential with each additional activity. On vacation (gosh I’m always on best behavior there), in JANURARY, just turned 21 (congratulations; you can legally buy handguns and drink now), brought mushrooms, boxes of wine, and did this next to a rapid and cold (45 degree) flowing water feature, at night, in the largest hole in the nation.

So what’s the cause and how should it be classified? I lean towards an act from a vengeful god who was punishing multiple sins, and I’m not using religion as an Aunt Sally or suffering from confirmation bias either. Yeah, riiiiight.

  28. Patty just finds it odd that everyone seemed to have gotten their hands on some pretty fancy designer drugs for 1969: synthetic cactus, or shrooms or the MDA that Gibby and Voytek had consumed can't be grown in one's back yard. The Bel and the victims were early adopters and must have been more closely connected to the chemist than most. There were lots of people taking drugs in the 60s, but not so many people making/importing them. Chemistry is not easy, trust Patty on that. And, it aint cheap.

  29. PS Patty loves all y'all for letting her freakflag fly!

  30. Re: the proliferation of exotic psychedelics in 1969. According to generally accepted history, there were certainly some prolific underground chemists active in the USA back then. Besides the famed Owsley, there were Tim Scully and Nick Sand... Perhaps the ill-fated Leonard Pickard had begun his career by then... In Europe, there were Richard Kemp and Ronald Stark, although it is entirely unclear who/what Stark was. I would assume that there were other underground chemists who successfully remained anonymous.

  31. The first time I did shrooms was the day after Thanksgiving when I was 15. My buddy Mark and I were eating turkey sandwiches while backpacking in the Sierra Foothills. We were below the snow line and it was a cool day, perfect for hiking. Every time I took a bite of my turkey sandwich I heard a bird chirp. I was laughing so hard I never was able to explain what was so funny to Mark..... When I was a teenager in the 70s I took so much LSD that I actually developed a stutter for a while. I stopped the LSD and in a couple of months the stutter went away. Then, I only did LSD on special occasions like concerts, going to see The Exorcist, camping.... I laughed through most of The Exorcist then I slept with the lights on for a week or two.... That movie scared the living hell out of me......

    ReplyDelete
  32. LOL Doc! Zodiac said that The Exorcist was the best saterical(sic) comedy he had ever seen. Did you have a little Zodiac mojo goin' on to scare you, too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. No Deb. I was a little kid in the Bay Area when Zodiac was in his hey day and we were all scared but I hadn't read Zodiac yet because it hadn't been written yet at that point. But, I was at a Day On The Green Concert in Oakland on Mick Jagger's birthday in 1978 seeing the Rolling Stones, Santana, Peter Tosh and Eddie Money for $12.50 and my buddies and I were tripping and we were laughing at people because their faces were distorting like Linda Blair's in The Exorcist. I have no affects from all of the LSD and I haven't taken it in over 20 years. What really makes me feel cheated is that I never got the flashbacks I was promised in high school health class......

  34. Doc ur cracking Patty up.and yes, Chris, Patty has read the same books you have. You don't think there was a connection? It is a long shot, I guess. Would make a great MOVIE, Col.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Patty, if you're talking about the Zodiac/Manson Connection I would have to say that I don't believe in it for a second. I do agree however, that it would make a great movie. I think that Crispin Glover would make an awesome Bruce Davis..... Kevin Kline as Inspector Toschi.... Phillip Seymorur Hoffman as Melvin Belli.... Juliette Lewis as Susan Atkins.... Alyssa Milano as anyone just because I like to look at her..... Anyone else have any actors that they think would be a fit for such a movie?

    ReplyDelete
  36. No not zodiac connection Doc, BEL. Patty thinks the zodiac stuff is crap, too.

  37. Max and Patty have discussed who they'd like to play in the Colonel's movie. Max will be Gary and Patty will be Doris. If the Colonel approves, which he will probably not.

  38. Christian Bale as Tex Watson? Anybody else? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?....

    ReplyDelete
  39. I could also picture Jeff Bridges in his Lebowski role smoking pot and eating garbage with the family and not quite understanding what they were all about, eating the garbage and waiting for Charlie to shut up so they could get to the bowling alley.... Yeah, yeah.... Lebowski, Manson and Clem on their own bowling team.... Big bowling shirts with a Gerard Agency sponsor patch on the back.... Damn my dispensary has some good hash....

    ReplyDelete
  40. Kelsey Grammer as PJ. If you saw him in the show, "Boss", you could picture it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Cindy, my mind went blank. Who's PJ?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Doc. PJ was Sharon Tate's father. I learned the most about him by reading Restless Souls. He was bad ass, but in a good way - if that makes any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How about Mel Gibson as Tex Watson?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I reviewed Geraldo Rivera interview again. I noticed Charlie grabs Geraldo's shoulder in first 5 minutes of interview. [Rivera slides his chair away, unloosens his tie.] Throughout rest of interview Rivera touches Charlie a number of times (on arm and chest) as he interrogates Charlie and Rivera's tone and questions are harsh. He's lucky that Charlie didn't attack him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Rob C. Gibson might be OK but I still like Christian Bale as Tex Watson.

I thought that Geraldo was very unprofessional in that interview. The interviewer should not be condescending to the person that's being interviewed no matter who they are. I lost a little bit of respect for Geraldo over that. I lost a lot more respect for Geraldo over "Now It Can Be Told". I thought it was a low quality show. I think Geraldo is one my all time favorite investigative journalists but I would like to see him get back to that investigative mode. He could be great again if he wanted to be.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Doc - Geraldo was very condescending and was also taking a huge risk. (I didn't notice all of the contact when I first watched it a few yrs ago.) He tapped Charlie in the chest and told him "Out of all the people I know behind bars you are the least likely person I ever want to see get out." Rivera assumed a lot which was the wrong thing to do. Ultimately, he was aiming for good ratings and praise from his peers. Charlie could have ripped his eyes out in a flash.
