In the Diane Sawyer interview: “I was raised in the judges robe, under Doc Hartman, I’m like his little boy”
In his 1992 Parole hearing: “So I went through the lieutenant there and they brought the guys - the lieutenants and the men that were in uniforms from the dentists office and all the Navy and the doctors from Doc Hartman, they brought them from back east…”
Any idea who or what a Doc Hartman is???

ReplyDeleteCharlie had a thing about ego, even writing a song about it, Old Ego is a Too Much Thing.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that he encountered Doc Hartmann's Ego Psychology in the prison system and incorporated it into his hodge podge philosophy and his rap.
Well didn't Hartmann do work on adolescent psychology too? Around the time Charlie would've been at the Training School for Boys? I mean, I'm definitely stretching here but could he (Charlie) just be free associating a name he heard at the time he was a kid in jail and first seeing psychiatrists?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on the book too. Not gonna be too quick to pick it up now. Since I can just read it for free on the net. Though I suppose I'll need it for the "collection"...
ReplyDeleteMakes sense, as Charlie was constantly talking about Fruedian ideas and if he can't read that well, how would he know about them? The doctor probably believes in Fruedian Pyschology, related it to Charlie and Charlie started believing/preaching.
ReplyDeleteThere was a Doctor Samuel B. Hartman around Columbus, Ohio. He had a huge farm called, obviously, the Hartman Farm that employed a large number of migrant workers. Charlie did move around some through Ohio. You might check it out more. http://www.forgottenoh.com/Hartman/hartman.html
