He looks now like any older guy you'd bump into at Barnes & Noble. Hard to believe he shot at police officers trying to escape a failed attempt to steal enough weapons to take over a 747 and kill passengers until Manson was released.
Do we have a reader located in Los Angeles who has the time to go to the court house and find a specific portion of the trial transcripts for us, then scan them & get them to us?
If so, please email me privately and I'll fill you in.
Here's some info on Larry that might interest you. I've often thought about spending the $3.00 for his pamphlet to see why he considers himself a "Political Prisoner".
Heidi S said... What did he get popped for later that was really violent, Matt?
On October 14, 1979, Larry was again wounded and captured along with Bill Dunne (an anti-authoritarian POW currently incarcerated in Terre Haute, Indiana) during the liberation of a comrade from a Seattle, Washington jail. Convicted of aiding an escape, the shooting of a policeman, bank expropriations (used for funding their activities), and conspiracy, he received multiple sentences of life in prison and 75 years, all consecutive. He has no known parole opportunities.
Heidi, The Grump posted his other big run-in. It wasn't some little thing as you can see. This guy has a history of very violent offenses and has spent a significant portion of his life in prison.
This man interests me, now. It's really interesting how he looked like a seemingly innocent teenager, getting mixed up with the Hawthorne incident by proxy. Then there are the rumors (what book was that printed in- I forget) that Larry was also present with Vance at the Shea killing. However, Larry went on to be a very violent man. My interest is if he always had this in him, or if his days with Manson changed his tune.
Love this site Eviliz your team does an amazing job I bet you got some of x members sweating.I always wonder if any of the hardcore family members will tell all one day.Its incredible how much they got away with.
Awesome article, J.C. I too agree, from pictures Larry looks an innocent sweet teenage boy. He probably wanted to prove himself by participating in the Hawthorne Shootout.
Did anyone see on his website or bio on the bottom of the page, where it explains "the motive" for the shootout? As I said, interesting how he never mentions Manson.
I think he doesn't mention Manson to sound like he was really trying to liberate true "political prisoners." Really, in that time it would be a lot easier to call Manson one because he was obviously subjected to unfair press, slandering, and absurd accusations. However, now, if he wants any validity (to his people) to his exploits he's better off leaving Manson out.
But, he did the shootout with Como, and he was linked with the Siombanese (msp) Liberation and the article I posted above said Larry was as well.
I know in the 70s there was accusations that the Siombanese Liberation Army was trying to free Manson, but it turned out they were trying to free Geronimo Ji Jagga.
That was about the time Como tried to escape in the same fashion George Jackson. Ironically, the Hawthorne Shootout was supposed to be based on how George's little brother tried to get him out (though he was killed along with jurors, the DA, etc).
Jonathan Jackson and other Panthers heisted guns and stormed the courtroom during George's trial and took him and other hostages.
When the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped Patty Hearst they demanded that the Hearst Family give way two million dollars worth of food. The program was called "People in Need" and it was Sara Jane Moore an accountant and political radical in the San Francisco Bay Area who headed up the program for the Hearst family.
Nice one guys! You wouldn't happen to have a larger version you could post up, would you? There are lots of little details that my detail-oriented eyes would like to scrutinize, heh heh.
Doc Sierra said... Dang Eviiz, you sure are good at finding things. Any idea where to find Jimmy Hoffa?
That info I was going to save for my next post but since you asked, he is burried at Barker Ranch. Apparently him and Charlie had an argument about something and well...
Larry was my neighbor for many years. I am one year older than he is and had a short term crush on him. He was a sweet, quiet guy. He has 3 younger brothers, two of whom are dead. My Dad would take us all to church when we were young. His Dad was a military lifer. Very hard on his boys, and that's putting it mildly. I really liked him.

ReplyDeleteHow many years did he serve for the Hawthorne shoot out ? And who was Larry Giddings again? Was he the guy who looked "too black" for Charlie?
ReplyDeleteLooks like one of the dudes my dad would bump into at his high school graduation.
I believe he did 5 years for Hawthorne. He got popped again later for something really violent & did time again.
ReplyDeleteSPECIAL REQUEST

DeleteThanks Grump for the link. Notice how he neglects to mention Manson and he gives another motive for the Hawthorne shootout.
