Charles Manson, a Hacksaw and a Hot Air Balloon Catalog

In 1982 while at Vacaville Prison Manson  was busted for having a hacksaw and drugs in his cell.  The story as told in "The Family" Sanders 2002 page 503 isn't exactly what the local newspapers were reporting about the incident.

"Manson back in 1980 had become the "chief clerk" to the Protestant chaplain at the prison in Vacaville, and prisoners wanted to hang out in the chapel as much to hang out with him as to celebrate Christianity. Naturally enough, he attracted racists and even a couple who reportedly cut swastikas into their foreheads. Manson was given an office and even a small garden by the chapel. Then, in 1982, officials discovered a hidden room entered through the ceiling above his office, where M had stashed four bags of marijuana and paraphernalia to aid an escape attempt."

The 2002 edition of Sanders' book is updated, well to 2002. It's about 130 pages longer than the original edition. He has left out most of the oo-ee-oo's in the newer edition, too!

Think I'll get the new edition. I'll miss the oo-ee-oo's.

Thanks Debs Orwhut I agree with you on both counts

Lauren, in the original edition of 'The Family' from 1971, Sanders included the phrase "oo-ee-oo" all over the text, usually to "punctuate" something supposed to be shocking, or creepy about the Family. I guess this was done in mock horror, and from my perspective, got really annoying, really quick.

I've wanted to read Sanders' updated book for a while, but no oo-ee-oos'!? The oo-ee-oo's are awesome! Sanders' kinda way of throwing in a spookoid cheesy horror movie vibe, comedically atmospheric and very 60s in style (or early 70s, whatever).

It's a shame he had to remove that chapter on The Process and devil-worshippers, too, even if it was complete bullshit. Reading about fucked-up hippy cults sacrificing dogs on LA beaches in the 1960s is darkly groovy, even if it has more to do with Sanders watching Rosemary's Baby too many times than with journalistic integrity or The Truth.

I can remember reading The Family for the first time many many years ago. The well placed oo-EE-oo's cracked me up. I didn't find them annoying at all...

I thought Sanders was goofy at first, then the oo-ee-oo's grew on me and became the fun part.

Yeah, actually I don't know why I found (and still do ) the oo-eee-oo's irritating, especially as The Family meant a lot to me when I first read it. I guess it's like how I love Aerosmith but am driven bonkers by Steven Tyler's sexual innuendo-laced bouts of verbal diharrea (sic).

On the other hand, when reading the Family way back, when ever Sanders would use phrases like "Group grope" or "hat in lap film" I'd smirk and giggle (being a goofy 7th grader).

As much great information Sanders' book has, I could never take it seriously because of that oo-ee-oo crap.
