Sharon Tate Interview on Carnaby Street (Merv Griffin Show 1966)

  1. Great find, thanks for sharing Matt. Hadn't seen this before. She's stunning and charming as always. I don't live far from London by train and go there every few weeks or so. It's interesting to contrast those streets then and now. Carnaby Street's mostly just a typical medium-to-high-end shopping area now. Not really a lot of uniqueness or counterculture to speak of. I guess you could say the same for the Haight in San Francisco. There has been gentrification but the Haight still retains a lot of the surface character you'd expect it to despite the steep climb in rents (I lived on Haight Street for awhile a few years ago). Sharon's comments on Chelsea are interesting. Today it's a very expensive place to live and the King's Road is full of luxury and designer shops. It has some character, but that character is distinctly posh. Both Carnaby Street and Chelsea get plenty of tourist traffic but if anyone goes to either place looking for Mary Quant-esque remants of the '60s they're probably pretty disappointed.

  2. Thanks, Matt. I've never seen that before, either. Sharon sounds like she has a bit of a British accent, doesn't she? She was so beautiful. And those incredible teeth! They were perfect. Merv looked pretty good, too.

  3. Thank you for saying that, Carol. I thought I was imagining the accent. I had a friend years ago that spent summers in Britain and she's come back with a touch of it.

And I'm old enough to remember the Merve Griffin Show (Moive, as he was known in NY).

  4. Matt, I'm old enough to remember, and enjoy, Moive, too. I'm glad you heard the accent, too. Well, Sharon spoke Italian fluently so maybe she just had an affinity for languages and accents. Merv's show, especially in the early years, had some great, thoughtful interviews. So much more than the nonsense that is late-night TV today. Guests weren't there just to plug their latest project, they were there to actually have a conversation.

  5. Yes, and as a sports fan he had guys like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Tom Seaver on there at the same time, just chit-chatting. Try to get that now!

  6. Exactly, Matt. I can't think of any show like his that's on today.

  7. That was an enjoyable clip. Sharon came across as very charming and well spoken. Will have to check out Vampire Killers one of these days.

Funny how the old talk show hosts would smoke on camera.

  8. When I was a child we lived briefly in Surrey, and when my parents took us into London, we they'd take us to a terrific toy store on Carnaby street, maybe on the corner. I think it was a Creative Playthings store, something like that. A really exciting street to visit in 1968-ish.
