We've discussed a little about who can be definitively placed in the Ukiah area on or before October of 1968. Deb mentioned this in the previous thread and sent me these articles to support it.
This Ukiah Daily Journal article from March 26, 1968 placed Dean Moorehouse in the area:
Ok, so this thing for me at least has just taken a turn for the weird with this article. It's the Ukiah Daily Journal from May 10, 1968. It places Brooks Poston in Mendocino County during that time in the company of... Reverend Jim Jones. Yes, THAT Reverend Jim Jones...
(This is the Poston section of the article cropped for easier reading):
The third article is about the attorneys assigned to the girls in Mendocino County. It says that Ella Jo Bailey aka Ella Beth Sinder was released on her own recognizance to have surgery. Interestingly, the attorney representing her was Tim O'Brien, the same attorney that months later represented Don Dulaney.

Poston really knew how to ferret out homicidal cult leaders, didn't he?
Fascinating that you are able to document Family members in Mendocino. My feeling is that Dean Moorehouse & Brooks Poston were docile & harmless. Moorehouse was a creep, but not a marauding murderer. Poston was a zombie, even though he didn't do drugs.
More likely it was Watson or Davis - if the Family was even involved...
That is some wierd stuff…. is the Jim Jones / Poston article in any way affiliated with the Dean Moorehouse article???

The articles I sent Matt are random, one is not necessarily related to another. They are part of my articles related to the Family being in Mendocino County. I suppose what they do is verify Family presence in Mendo in 1968 contrary to what is stated in some of the books about Manson having sent the girls up there solo, without any of the men, to scout for recruits for the Family. Another version has Manson sending the girls up to Mendo because he wanted to cut them loose from the Family. Both scenarios seem unlikely when presented with contradictory evidence from a source that was largely disinterested with the Family at that time.
The Jim Jones "article" is actually an ad taken out by one of Jones parishioners to promote Jones ministry.
Interesting stuff.
Brooks met Dean in Ukiah. When Dean went down to LA looking for Charlie, Brooks went with him. So Brooks didn't meet Charlie until June of '68. Brooks was in LA, until going up to Death Valley on October 31st, '68
What are the odds? Jim Jones and Charles Manson in that short stretch before anyone heard of them!
The older I get the less the world makes sense to me - a Mormon in the White House, Lance Armstrong getting a standing ovation etc etc.
With regards to the Ukiah murders, does it not seem reasonable that certain information could be attainable, either by Johnny U. or really by anyone? This stuff isn't national security. Why can't we know the following:
1. Since the Ukiah investigation has never been closed, I am assuming that whatever physical evidence collected at the time remains. This includes the leather thongs used to strangle as well as the clothes the victims were wearing and whatever matter was under Mrs. Warren's fingernails. I know there was no DNA in those days but were they able to isolate hair samples or blood samples? The next obvious question would be could any of those samples yeild DNA at this late date? And if someone has done some DNA work has it been compared to anyone in the Family?
2. There were unaccounted fingerprints taked from Mrs. Warren's trailer. Is it possible to know if they were ever tested against Family members?
3. Has any investigator into the Ukiah murders ever considered "sweating" Tex or other Family members. For example, Tex still has never been prosecuted for Shorty's murder and it would be a slam dunk to convict him and possibly get a death sentance. Why not hold this over his head to try and shake out some Ukiah info?
This was a brutal murder of two women, one a mother of three young boys and the other a grandmother. Why can't I shake the feeling that whatever investigation that has been done has been half-ass, i.e., nobody has gone the extra yard. You know how cops are, once the decide on a prime suspect they tend to get tunnel vision. Maybe the just didn't but Dulahey's alibi from the start and never considered anyone else.
I sure hope Johnny U. gets some answers.
how do you edit a post...got sloppy at the end - the/they, but/buy and such. soppy.
We're all asking those questions, Leary. I guess we'll find out. Johnny and Deb have promised go keep us in the loop. We'll bring it to you as we learn it ourselves, we promise.
thanks matt. sorry to state the obvious. just sometimes the Manson sage seems so devoid of functional commen sense. I will never understand why the State of California chose/chooses not to prosecute the vile Watson for Shorty's murder and get him on death row where he belongs.
At this point in Jim Jone's career it seems he was completely sane and truly in line with Christ's teachings. Too bad he lapsed into insanity...
Crazy how connected the Family was other groups/leaders, Jim Jones.. I'v heard the Family had connections with the SLA too.
Does anyone have a theory of the possible motives the family could have had if they were involved?
And Dean Moorehouse reminds me of this guy who goes to my school: 32 or 33 with a 4 year old child who is in a frat, studies nursing and hits on me all the time ughh.
Wish I could find a mugshot of Dean in 67 or 68.. in his latest one before he died he looked so ugly and creepy.Bad Santa.. literally. Don't know he could have had a beauty like Ruth Ann!
jones was not really all that sane at the time as he moved his congregation from indianapolis to redwood valley becuase he was fearful a nuclear was going to break out and read in esquire magazine that redwood valley was one of ten safe zones. also listed in the magazine article was belo horizonte in brazil was going to survive as well and he took his family there as well. of course jones met with fidel castro during the cold war so who knows what he was really up to and who was he working for---the cia is my guess.
another strange coincidence was several members of the fountain of the world who survived the bombing of krishna venta joined people's temple and died in jonestown. a lot of homicidal cult leaders in california during those days.
I finally got a response from the detective who's in charge of the murders of my mother and grandmother. He's working on a recent homicide and said he'd call me when he gets a chance. I hope it doesn't take 45 years to solve this one. One of the first things I'm going to ask him to do is read this Blog. A lot of good stuff here. Thanks to all of you for the time and work you've put into bringing this all back to light. I'll keep you posted.
A public servant who can't spare twenty minutes to answer maybe five basic questions of where the investigation stands for the son of one of the victims. Johnny also being the grandson of another victim and the brother of another.
Instead, Johnny U gets an apparent "don't call us, we'll call you".
Crapola.
Let's storm the castle.
Johnny that's great they have at least acknowledged you. I do hope he gets back to you in a reasonable amount of time. Not many departments, especially small ones have a dedicated cold case unit. They work on the cold cases in the lulls between current cases and unfortunately most departments are short staffed. Mendocino County is no exception, I live here and we have only one resident sheriff for a large remote area of the county. If our one guy needs back up he has to depend on CHP or a long wait for a sheriff from another part of the county.
This is from an email I just got from Robert Hendrickson:
Great Poston find. He mentions Ukiah in my book.
He and Watkins knew far more than we've ever heard.
In San Francisco 76 , when MANSON (movie) opened there, at a press screening the reporters all aksed me about Jim Jones. They knew then that HE could be the next CM story.
yours is clearly not just the voice of knowledge but the voice of reason here, DebS. I understand the limitations of a rural law enforcement office. But it still just rubs me the wrong way that the detective said he would call JOhnny "when he got a chance". I just think the guy should be eager to talk to Johnny and would have set up an appointment. Small matter, really. But I just don't see this thing shaking out till law enforcement gets really aggresive.
I've got a world of respect for Mr. Hendrickson, Matt, but his assertion of Posten and Watkins knowing allot more than we have ever heard is a bit of a head scratcher. In his later years Paul Watkins seemed a fairly forthright guy and when he knew he was dying of cancer why would he not come clean about any Family misdeeds he knew about. Unless, of course, he was directly involved and didn't want to leave his kids that legacy.
It is interesting to speculate who might have the most unknown Family info - is it Lynn or Nancy or Gypsy or who?
