SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A parole board has recommended parole for a convicted killer described as a top follower of mass murderer Charles Manson.
Bruce Davis' 27th parole hearing postponed back in June after Davis reported feeling ill, the L.A. County district attorneys office said.
Davis is serving 2 life sentences for the 1969 slayings of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea.
During today's rescheduled hearing board members found Davis suitable for parole based on his positive adjustment, record of no recent disciplinary problems, and successful completion of academic and vocational education and self-help programs.
He was not involved in the infamous murders by Manson followers of actress Sharon Tate and six others in Los Angeles.
During his 40 years in prison, Davis became an ordained minister and earned master's degrees in philosophy and religion via a correspondence program.
He was recommended for parole in 2010, but his release was later blocked by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Davis was convicted of helping kill musician Gary Hinman in his Topanga Canyon home and former stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea, who lived in Manson's commune at the Spahn movie ranch in Chatsworth.
Schwarzenegger acknowledged that Davis had made "some credible gains" during his incarceration.
But in turning down the parole recommendation, he cited the "especially heinous" nature of the slayings and Davis' repeated efforts to minimize his involvement.

So what do we think now? Will Bruce possibly be out shortly to breathe fresh air, and experience nature, sunshine and all the things he has
longed for all these years? Or- will the Governor slam the door on him crushing
his spirit and hope for maybe the last time?
When you're convicted of first-degree murder and get a life sentence, doesn't that mean LIFE? What's with the parole?
ReplyDeleteI have been on record for some time saying that none of them will ever get out...
ReplyDeleteNow???? LULU is holding her breath right now I bet!!
His chances of not getting a Gubernatorial axe are MUCH better with Brown than Ahnold.
ReplyDeleteThis should be interesting.
I would bet money that he actually walks free. Governor Moonbeam will let him out.
DeleteIf Davis is paroled and walks free, you would think Van Houten would be next in line.
ReplyDeleteThe Department of Corrections was never set up to be a nursing home.
None of them are getting out....
ReplyDeleteThe first time ‘Life without the possibility of parole’ was handed out (I think) was so Leopold and Loeb could avoid the Death Penalty. Leopold was of course paroled, so that concept didn’t last long.
ReplyDeleteIt’s said that ignorance of the law is no defense, yet you are given a mini course on Constitutional law when Miranda Rights are read to you after arrest. Weird.
The law also states that you can’t be held liable for anything you sign while intoxicated. Yet the police have people sign tickets for DUI arrests every day. Droll.
The Death Penalty was suspended and everyone was commuted to ‘life’ to match the new lower penalty. But when the speed limit was raised to 65, I never received a refund for the ticket I got doing that speed on the Interstate years before. I keep checking the mail though.
I got fined $100 for running a stop sign and $100 for speeding; I asked the judge if they would be consecutive or concurrent fines. He told me they were consecutive and to be paid a week before my 8 hours of public service. I told him I didn’t have 8 hours of public service, he looked at the paperwork and said “You’re right, you have 16”. I fought the law, and the law made me its bitch.
Brown seems less wimpy than he was the last time he was Governor, he may keep Davis locked up. If he does release him, I would expect some people to remind him that there are plenty of criminals on Death Row that need his attention also.
ok, sort of off topic, but it pisses me off that I have to struggle to pay for school and all these murderers get master's degrees on my dime! Ugh.
ReplyDeleteA point to ponder, Stacey. But life in prison in exchange for a degree is pretty steep tuition.
ReplyDeleteYou could be the most educated person on your cell block!
another thing to be pissed about is that manson had a very expensive surgery to help him with copd. how many hard working people--ship builders (many for war), 9/11 rescuers, etc. would give their right arm for that surgery?
ReplyDeleteStacey, for some reason your comments brought to mind the image of a down-and-out student whacking a few piggies with a knife in a desperate attempt to have the state pick up the tab for his/her education... oo-ee-oo
ReplyDeleteon-topic... It wouldn't make any sense to me that Bruce could get parole and not Bobby. And as others have stated, it's doubtful Bruce will get out though. "CANDIDATE X FREED CONVICTED MANSON MURDERER" would make a great campaign attack ad, after all.
Love that picture Saint. Is that from HWY 1 in Santa Cruz? Freedom, CA. The home of my favorite radio station, KPIG.
ReplyDeleteDoc-
ReplyDeleteKPIG? lol I believe that is where that sign is from actually
KPIG. How appropriate...

I agree. My money says he walks this time. Leslie will get out too on her next hearing.
I'm in. He walks.
ReplyDeleteIs it irony that Bruce, Bobby and Leslie as essentially "prisoners of Manson"? Tex and Pat will never get out because of multiple visciousness, but the other three would have been paroled long ago if not for the Manson notoriety. Being closely linked to the 'face of evil' just doesn't look good on the resume.
ReplyDeleteBruce has always been the scariest of the Manson men for me, personally. Even more than Tex- who just seems like dumb hick to me- Bruce is just plain sinister.
ReplyDeleteWhere was he during the Tate and LaBianca murders? At the ranch? Why wasn't he sent out with the others?
Tex is the scariest from me because no matter how dumb he seems, we know that he's capable of the most heinous, despicable acts, including bloody murder of a pregnant woman. Bruce doesn't seem trustworthy but I've never gotten vibes off of him that go above and beyond the bad vibes the others give off. I just don't see it. He's a killer and not to be trusted, but to me, it's clear - no one tops Tex. Not Manson, no one. Tex is a monster with a toothy grin and a twinkle in his eye. He chills me to the bone.
ReplyDeleteI just don't see it if they let Bruce go why not Bobbie and Leslie my guess is the die in prison

ReplyDeleteI think he will get out as now that he has been recomended twice, the second time even after the Guv denied it the first time because of the heinous nature of the crimes, will make it seem purely political to not let him out.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Gov. Brown is big on relieving prison overcrowding. He's 70 years old and has been incarcerated for 43 of them.
ReplyDeleteBrown's spokesman Gil Duran declined comment after Thursday's hearing, saying the issue had not yet reached the governor's desk.
Anyone think chances of parole may change once Charlie passes on? He's what 77 now
ReplyDeleteWhat's up Matt n Miss Patty been M.I.A. trying to surf as much as possible gettin ready for Bali this winter hoping for internet connection when there's no waves
PEACE
manson's death can only help the others.
ReplyDeleteI guess the point that they have been held longer than most others convicted of similar crimes does make you think. To me, though, the heinousness of their acts should have cost them their lives. Life in prison is much cushier than death. And I fully agree that the free tuition they have received is disgusting.
ReplyDeleteI think Manson's death will change everything for everyone but Tex and possibly Pat.
ReplyDeleteBeing convicted by Helter Skelter automatically increases the odds of them being released by Helter Skelter.
IDK PERSONALLY I BELIEVE VANHOUTEN KRENWINKLE AND WATSON WILL NEVER SEE FREEDOM JUST TO MUCH NOTERIETY INVOLVED IN T-L CASE
ReplyDeleteI BELIEVE IN MY HEART THEY SHOULD NEVER BE SET FREE IF YOU DISSAGREE GIVE RESTLESS SOULS A READ
