Seems to me that if he was such the upstanding citizen that he claims to be that he would not have harbored a killer's confession or the killer's ID from the police--especially when asked about it.

Getting stabbed to death in prison is a very real possibility every single day. "Snitching" to the police about murders by another inmate you are locked up with is not a safe thing to do. 95% of prison inmates wouldn't give the cops the time of day, let alone a murderers ID. Davis knows that, that's how he's remained alive in prison for this long.

Sunset, I could appreciate that threat at the time in 1990 (though questionable for Davis' religious beliefs), but I was actually making reference to the recent inquiry after Purcell had already confessed to the murders and the police were simply attempting to validate Purcell actually did it: "Davis first denied any such conversation when reached by phone, Duncan said. But then officers traveled to talk with him in person at the California Men's Colony at San Luis Obispo."
The former Manson Family member was polite but reserved, Duncan said.
"He was cordial with us," Duncan said.
Davis said he had lied on the phone and admitted Pursel had told him about the murders, but he didn't add much detail, Duncan said."
A major factor in my judgment is Davis' claim of redemption--him being a born-again/ minister/man of God, who bases much of his favor for parole on this fact. With that in mind, it seems to me at that when they called Davis that as a man of God he might be as forthcoming as possible in helping them confirm Purcell's confession instead of outright lying to them. Instead, the police had to travel to CA to get an admission and still he was not very forthcoming in helping authorities or another victims' family find justice.
Funny that inmate rules trump religious virtues, A true beleiver born again, saved religous guy would spill the beans, because in his mind he would beleive "god" would protect him.
They should just turn him loose. Look at all these people, they are OLD. What are they going to do if they get out? Form a gang called the gray panthers and go on a rampage? I'm sure.
The State of CA won't dig reasonably deep at Barker, but I'll bet they bring up the "possibilty" of more bodies at the parole hearing.
ReplyDeleteWhat's on them tapes!
ReplyDeletereceiving unauthorized prescription glasses? Oh the horrors.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting article involving Davis.

I'm guessing California's budget issues aren't helping when it comes to looking for possible Manson family victims.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mention it in the write-up, but the board has also received opposition letters from brothers and sisters of Doreen Gaul.
Interesting article Alisa. Definitely doesn't make Davis look good.
So the Gaul family is pretty sure it was him? Wow.

It also kind of sounds like Davis took the confession while acting as Purcell's spiritual leader, right?
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Ella Joe wrote a letter to the parole board.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if his hearing will be broadcast on Tru-Tv? Can't find any info ANYWHERE!

ReplyDeleteI say we let him out and let him spend time in the homes as a guest, of each member of the Parole Board...
ReplyDeleteJust read that the hearing was delayed...
