DAY 5
A Little bit of lower Topanga
The Malibu Feed Bin at the base of Topanga Canyon
Liz, Patty & I briefly ventured into the Snake Pit.
It was creepy. First a pentagram drawn into the sand and some menacing parrots.
We got the hell out of there.
Spahn Ranch
A few shots of where the actual ranch buildings were:
The Cave at Spahn Ranch:
A lot of sediment has built up on the floor of the cave since this photo in 1970. There are 9 of them in there. I know I'm taller than most but I'm fairly agile. I couldn't fit in there. You can really see the difference by comparing then to now.
Matt, Patty & Liz at the cave
Our terrific tour guide, Summer.
Notice the aura?
Charlie's rock
His initials are still visible
Bruce's Car and the beautiful trail that leads to it
Bruces's car
The trail just before the descent to where the car is located
From there you can see downtown LA
Yes, that is a very large rattlesnake.
Summer & I startled it and a second later it curled-up & rattled like... well, a startled rattlesnake!
It made the hair on our necks stand up!
That made two rattlesnakes spotted in one day. Summer says she normally encounters one or two a year, so it is likely to be a big rattlesnake year. Watch where you step!
Fountain of the World
THE END OF EVILIZ TOUR 2012!!!

Nope, don't want no part of no rattlesnakes. Where's the Manson family with their guns and knives when you need them.
My dad killed a black rattlesnake with 17 rattles and button about 40 years ago and it still scares the hell out of me.
He stuffed it, sunset?
AWESOME! well done
I don't think Liz is up for a 2013 Tour, but I am always open to another Devil's Hole/Barker Ranch run!
My funny stories from the EVILIZ TOUR 2012:
At one point, we had 5 dogs, 4 of them male, including mine. One of the other male dogs kept trying to have sex with mine. As soon as we chased him away, he kept coming back for more.
Rocky, the Ballarat caretaker loves cookies. I let the group know this. So Liz gives him an open box of cookies. He let her have it! "You couldn't have got me a full box??"
BTW: don't believe them, I DO NOT SNORE!
Sweet about the horny dogs.
Did you find Gary's VW van with the 1969 parking sticker on it? The one that Michael found? The one that Bruce wrecked and left for dead.

No, but he cut the rattles off of it and they are still here in a jar somewhere.
Grump, I bet Liz will be ready next Spring. I'm sorry I couldn't make it this year, but I will make it the next time ya'll are ready, even if it kills me. And if it does, just plant me at the ranch so Buster can have a reference point.
Grumpy Poo! To set the record straight, Mr Patty bought them red velvet cookies for hisself and was NICE enough to share with Rocky when he found out that Rocky liked cookies.
The Pattys so enjoyed our time with y'all. Kisses to Apollo!
@Katie, re: Gary's truck: Patty wants to see that on the list for 2013 after we all do some training, first. Summer tells us that it is a 3 mile hike to that point in an area not-so-near to the other well known sites. Patty can do that if she works her way up to it...
Mattie of course could do it before breakfast.
This tour was fascinating! Now, here are a couple of questions about Day 5.
Did anyone notice the make and model of Bruce's car? How did Summer learn the ranch well enough to become a tour guide?
Thanks for sharing your great adventure.
OH my!!! If you decide to return next spring or fall, I would love to accompany you!
I had a ".significant other" whose mother was Linda Kasabians Sunday School teacher and Lindas father was their insurance agent.. That's a bit twilight zonish. They hated it when I would bring it up,,,,guess you can figure I didn't last long in that family!!!!
One of the daughters ran off with the "family" but her mother stalked her down and returned her to her proper place.
By the way, how do I get a name to post instead of the group of numbers and letters?
Summer has lived pretty close to the ranch for years and has hiked that area a lot. She & I went in February of last year...we didn't notice a make or model of the car then. It's kind of squashed and pretty rusted and all identifying emblems are long gone. At least to my eyes they were.
Not 100% sure but I think you have to sign up through google.
was there anyone living at the foutain of the world? is it a commune or cult nowadays?
Thanks,Stacey. One of the men will probably know about the car. I couldn't tell from the camera angle.
My most sincere compliments to all involved...
This was an amazing adventure that you really made us feel vicariously a part of with the daily pics and updates...
it was fun to watch- and I imagine a trip none of you will soon forget...
Have a safe trip home!!
orwhut, Summer & I discussed it a bit while we were there. I briefly considered getting around the rear of the car to get a look for clues. However the brush around that thing is very prickly and close. Also, it was 5 minutes after encountering Mr. Rattlesnake so personal safety won out over make/model curiosity.
I suspect it's a chevrolet corvair. The lines seem correct, and the hole on the front fender was the gas filler access. Thanks to all for the pics and reports. Great stuff.
Our guess was a Corvair as well.

When you get to the blog on the very top right hand corner there is a sign-in link. Click that. On the next page at the top you will see a red Sign Up button. After clicking that you can set up your profile.
FOW was definitely occupied. I believe Summer said that the occupant is the last remaining member of the church, but let's wait for her to confirm.
Thats what Patty heard her say too.
Yes, there is one "member" of the church left living there. However, the cult is now "The Dominion of Melchizedek"...I have no idea how this relates to the Fountain of the World...but, it's freaking weird. He has a website- this page show him @ FOW, http://www.melchizedek.com/legations/na1.htm but just check out www.melchizedek.com for more info on the kookery that is this "group. I haven't delved very far into it so I don't know how much this has to do with the original FOW but one thing is for sure, Box Canyon is a breeding ground for weirdos, and that is an understatment.
Gary's bus is in the Pacific Palisades, near Dennis Wilsons house, and I will admit that it is a LONG hike. I have many pictures of the bus, it's UCLA tags, etc, etc. I'll send them to the site as soon as I have a minute!
And that rattlesnake was a nasty black rattlesnake that I wanted nothing to do with. He was a meanie!
BTW, it's probably been read by many on the blog, but here is an interesting FOW article http://www.simivalleyacorn.com/news/2004-04-02/Neighbors/013.html
Thank you Matt, for the sign in info.
Wengr and Matt,
Thanks. The lines looked familiar but I didn't think about a Corvair. The gas door in the front fender would seem to cinch it.
Thank you for sharing your experiences!
You are right, Davis' car is a first generation ('60-'64) Chevrolet Corvair Monza Coupé
I've never had the sense that anyone knows if former Family members read the TLB blogs. I was just imagining Mary or Ruth Ann or such checking out the photos and having flashbacks. Does anyone know if Bruce, Tex or Bobby have internet access? We know Charlie doesn't. Do ya think Clem is sitting in some Internet Cafe in Spain checking out the old haunts? I know they all don't want to be hassled, but it is hard to imagine they don't have any curiousity about the past.
What a road trip. Thanks for sharing!
Good times! The size of that cave still amazes me. Tiny. But like Patty said, those girls were five foot nothing and 100 pounds.
I would do a partial of the 2013 tour. Maybe just Barker for lunch. LOL Seriously.
Summer
According to the Yahoo Krishnaventa group, Earth's Order of Melchizedek (www.eoom.org), maintains that Krishnaventa claimed to be a Melchizedek Priest, and he is actually "Machiventa Melchizedek", who ever that is.
It's in the Krishnaventa homepage, I hope I paraphrased correctly. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/krishnaventa/?yguid=190625649
All this reminds me of the old college fraternity song stating that says Adam was the first fraternity member.
Where can I read more about Bruce Davis Corvair?
Thank you

You just want to see Rocky again!
Sunset, think of how many rats and mice that snake would've eaten, had your father not killed him... :-(
No CA inmate has internet access; I don't know about Bobby in OR.
Great pics...thanks for bringing us all along.
Squeaky in a swim hole...implies that she did actually "bathe"...that's a good thing.
Very cool. I live right next to this place but have only been on the set area once, so I'll have to go back and find the cave. Thanks for sharing the awesome photos.
Too bad I haven't checked here in a couple weeks. I live right near Spahns. Woulda met y'all for lunch and a hike! :-)
