"Death to Pigs" has arrived

I ordered the new Hendrickson book "Death to Pigs". It arrived today. As an established customer I was able to get a "First 100" galley with a certificate of authenticity signed by RH. Cool.

I will be reviewing it as I read it. Perhaps not chapter by chapter, but as the spirit moves me I guess. At the moment, I'm insanely busy with work as well as training twice a day for a bodybuilding competition in 4 weeks. So, this may not be a fast read. Bear with me though.

Chapter 2. - Hendrickson has begun filming. It's night time. The family are playing instruments, playing songs and making up songs.

They are far from the road and the ranch is pitch black. A mother and father find the group and ask if anyone has seen their daughter. Gypsy tells RH that they are undercover cops.

Very disturbing. Parents looking for their "missing" children at Spahn.

Dying to see it.

They were freaky, defiant hippies moving further to the dark side with each day.

Please don't think that I admire any of them or approve of the things they did. But they did have an impact on American culture, whether they had meant to or not. We are talking about them tonight, aren't we. As we did yesterday. Like we'll do tomorrow.

I remember reading "Desert Shadows" and thinking how creepy it must have felt for the sheriff's dept to be waiting in the desert at dark until dawn to surprise attack the family at Barker. Sounds like this book will capture some of those weird moments when things go bump at night.

Is it illustrated? How much did it cost?

Yes, it is full of pics from H's films.

More importantly, it's full of dialogue between H & the Family members. I'm enjoying it immensely so far. The cost is steep ($99.95).

"The cost is steep ($99.95)"

yikes! so far, is it worth the investment?

A great moment in Chapter III. H has been speaking with Bruce & Clem:

"We take a break now, me and two of th Manson gang's highest ranking philosophers. What is difficult here, is trying to dislike Bruce and Clem for possibly being cold blooded killers. I mean, that's what any good American would do, is hate them. But they are treating me with a great deal of respect. They are even opening their inner most selves up to me."

Mary, it is worth any price because it contains a lot of insight from a man who spent a lot of time with the Family. They (at least to page 82) trust him and give him a vantage point that no one outside the Family had.

I'm too busy to spend this kind of time reading, but I CAN'T put it down!

Is this book self-published?

If it is, why couldn't this dude just set up a blog like, well, the rest of us....?

Hendrickson got totally jipped a long time ago when his documentary was banned. He got an academy award nomination, he helped the prosecution in Lynette Fromme's trial, he's been there, done that. I think he deserves to make a little money for 40 years worth of hassle and heartache.

I don't see that the book is for sale on that website. How can I get a copy?

Matt said...

Foster. Yes, it's a little confusing. Here's what I did:

I used the email address on the site. I sent my shipping & quantity to that address.

The, I sent the $99.95 to that same email address via PayPal. The book was shipped via Priority Mail the next day, and they sent me my tracking number by email.
