  2. Smoking isn't kind to anyone. Yuk...

  3. Thank you Patty needs this reminder. She is having a hard time kissing the Marlboro Man goodbye for good.

  4. Liz we both know how stuff STINKS from smoking...haha

  5. These pictures amaze me. Ruth Ann and Kitty look to be in better shape than they were at the ranch while Ella Jo seems to be on oxygen. The first two must have kissed the Marlboro Man good by before it became the thing to do.

    Good luck, Patty.

  6. i tried to kiss the marlboro man goodbye too, it never lasts.

  7. Try kissing a different spot.

  8. Good luck to you too, Liz. Maybe, next time will be the charm. My problem tearing my self away from Aunt Jemima and Betty Crocker.

  9. Jim Beam & I still hang out every now & then. Some friends you just have to keep around.

  15. You must have gotten this picture off facebook.

It's too bad you guys make fun of someone with emphysema.

It's not funny. You can't breathe. It's a death sentence. Not funny at all.

Ella Jo Bailey. So young once. She is the one who made Gary dead.

    Now she's almost there.

Not funny at all. Like it wasn't funny when Gary died. Remember your friend Liz!!! Molly!!!

    "Kiss the Marlboro Man".

    It's not funny at all!!!

Please post this comment, because we should all know how "not funny" this is. She's dying.

  16. Katie, I nursed my dad when he died at age 57 of cancer on New Year's Eve. I still smoke. Don't judge, K? Go pick a fight somewhere else please.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Come to think of it, he was a month short of 57, 56 to be exact. I can still remember it like it was yesterday, though it was over 14 years now.

I try not to think about it any more, though.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Patty, I'm not judging. Why would you think that??? I'm not judging anyone. I'm just saying stop laughing.

I'm just sick and tired of folks laughing at people's last ride.

    It's time to stop!!!!

    That's all I'm sayin'.

Just stop making fun and stop laughing.

    Cuz it's not funny anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Patty you say you nursed your Dad with Cancer, and I'm saying it's not funny.

    Why are we in disagreement????

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm sorry Patty this is not about me, it's about you.

    I'm sorry your Dad died.

    I'm sorry.

  22. Liz's blog is the best. We should all be thankful that she is so kind to share anything with us. No one is making fun of Ella Jo's situation. We all know it sucks to have a loved one or someone we know, die or suffer from C.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Interesting how the photo brings out different reactions in different people. My reaction was neither PC nor rational, but it was very human. All reactions are valid, IMHO. Good luck, Ella Jo. You still have that spunky twinkle in your eye!

    ReplyDelete
  24. FYI- i was not making lite of her situation. i myself have COPD from smoking. COPD includes emphysema. that will probably be me in 20 more years.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I quit cold-turkey December 2005 and never looked back.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Liz, I know exactly where you're coming from. My partner has COPD from 40 years of smoking. He takes Spiriva and another inhaler. His doctor says he'll be on oxygen in a year. I smoke a pack a day. I'm sure I'm headed for the same thing if I don't stop soon, but it's hard to do and honestly, I enjoy smoking too much.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 'Watching' someone die too pains.

My father died of COPD/emphysema, same as his brother/my uncle...dad's case daily over a period some 6 years and his brother a bit longer demise.

Not so much an kaleidoscope of color as antithesis rainbow shaded hues- greys & blacks/days & nights same.

Use of inhalers & oxygen tanks... and still 'smoke smoke smoke that cigarette', till last dying gasps, tiny sparks & oxygen tanks hinting possibility an even earlier reservation ('departure date'), if not necessarily 'going out with a bang'.

Lung cancer too offers a legacy.

Actors Yul Brynner (The Magnificent 7) and William Talman (Perry Mason's ever losing counterpart) left anti-smoking commercials after they died (via the magic of videotape), latter filmed under the numb morphine just 6 weeks before Talman's own death; didn't look to be especially on his death bed, such the somewhat insidious nature.

If you're old enough, you probably remember the commercials - if not here they are, top left/right the page:

    http://www.classictvads.com/smoke_1.shtml

As Yul's final words instruct: "whatever you do just don't smoke."

If such cautionary tales/those words don't 'bring you to now' in Charlie-speak, nothing will.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's sad to see all of those young people of that era, in pictures, w/ stogues in hand. Charles has emphasema too, and sometimes has breathing treatments. You see the photos of all the famous movie stars and they all have cigarettes. I am told by elders that Doctors often prescribed smoking in those days, to strengthen weak lungs. It was on TV, commercials for cigs were in magazines and on TV, so everyone of that generation thought it was acceptable. Ms. Patty and others, please stop smoking now!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Liz, good for you, and jjfab, please stop, you're hurting your loved one as well as yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  30. AC, you're right. Frank (my partner) and I both want to stop. The longest I've gone without is three months when I quit cold turkey back in 2007. It wasn't that bad. Don't even remember why I started again. I'll be 40 in August and I want to be done with it for good.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Fate can be cruel...my dad's case, he was NOT a smoker at all - until he met my mother, who was merely a 'social smoker' (looked cool, blah blah blah).

She stopped early on and still lives today - he did not, instead escalated to 4 packs a day those Red Pall Malls... might as well wrap your lips around an exhaust pipe & inhale, same difference.

Here's a 60's cigarette commercial (anti) from YouTube that hints the possibility 'collateral damage' -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmzDLzqQ-A0

    ReplyDelete
  32. When I was a toddler my dad let me take a drag off of someone else's cig. I choked, I gagged, I cried. I was 2 and I remember it! I never touched a gig again. Ever. EVER. E V E R.

    ReplyDelete
  33. sure would be nice to discuss Ella Jo the person instead of Ella Jo the photo. The years are kind to some, not so much to others. And who amongst us hasn't made bad life choices.
I loved Patty's "spunky twinkle in the eye" comment. Ella Jo always struck me as an intelligent and interesting character, much more so than the majority of the Garbage people. I wish there was more info about her.

    ReplyDelete
  34. oh yeah, last month I was diagnosed with lung cancer. Never smoked a single butt though both parents were chain smokers. Whose to say if that caused it, the docs are reluctant, always covering their asses. But it has been documented, the dangers of second hand smoke. So do it for the ones you love.

Movie version of SUSAN pic???? What movie are you referring to?

    >>I tend to think this katie is some one who is big in the hips and small on the mind>>>

You have amazing perception powers based on a "movie version of SUSAN pic". HA HA.

Anyway, on to saner things. Maybe I overreacted to the snickering about Ella's condition, I've watched someone die of emphysema and it's not pretty. But I think that everyone who posted knows how serious the disease is. So, apologies to all if I stepped on anyone's toes.

When I look at that picture, I see someone having a good day, touching her grandson (I'm guessing that's who he is) and glad that the grim reaper has given her at least one more day.

"candy" is refering to your avatar/character, because it is not a picture of "the" susan atkins. it is a picture of the girl who played susan in one of the movies.

  38. Seriously Katie? You don't really think that's Sadie do you? I'm a newbie and I can tell that is from a movie.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's actually from something called "These Children Who Come At You With Knifes." It's a weird photography/art piece thing. You can see it here:

  49. thanks Katie for using Susans real picture now and not questioning me when yu used a fake one-X

    ReplyDelete

now end of the discussion. lol

  58. Newbie here on commenting, but I remember somewhere reading that Ella Jo was quite beautiful, the source compared her to Greta Garbo.

I wish I could remember the source, but I don't, it is somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  59. it was danny decarlo who said ella joe was a greta garbo type.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "a great garbo type". now that is intrigueing. thanks maggie. i never thought of Donkey Dan as a renaissance type making such references. Was he refering to her aloofness, her mysteriousness? Even though she was part of the Family for long time she is not in alot of the photos. It seems she maintained her individualism more than others. Where might that garbo reference be? In HS or The Family?

    ReplyDelete
  61. the reference to her being Greta Garbo like is in The Family - "also oozing into the acid mosaic at this time was a lovely girl named Ella Beth Sinder aka Ella Bailey aks Yeller, whom a biker named Danny DeCarol describes as a slim shapely Greta Garbo type."

    ReplyDelete
  62. Leary, remember that most of those pics from Spahn were taken post-crimes. That's why we never see Katie, LuLu, Tex, Charlie or Sadie in them either.

Ella saw bad new around the corner and blew that popsicle stand. So did Kitty, Hoyt & Simi Sherry. They are also noticeably absent from the Spahn pics.

Pre-crimes, I'm sure getting a photo of Ella around there would have been easy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. All of this made me read up on Garbo. I found this. Interesting. May be what DDD was alluding to (not that he is a deep thinker).

According to the memoir written by silent film star Louise Brooks, she and Garbo had a brief liaison. Brooks described Garbo as masculine but a "charming and tender lover".

  64. Some Greta pics:

  65. I always thought she was cute. After seeing her highschool picture, I second guessed that thought. Out of all the girls, she has always been the one that I've been the most curious about. This being that she was there for two years and she is only mentioned a few times here and there.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Probably not necessary to get this specific... but what the heck.

The excerpt Mary related (where DeCarlo describes Ella as a "Greta Garbo type") is the second paragragh from the bottom, on page 28, of "The Family".

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yeah, Ken. Those horn-rimmed glasses were bad.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Matt - For me it was her teeth and the glasses. The glasses might be OK on someone else, but that might be due to some odd fetish I have:)

    ReplyDelete
  69. hey Matt, Louise Brooks is a fabulous study, a real character. Her bio is great. She and Chaplin had a interesting affair.

    ReplyDelete
  70. oh,and thanks for the heads up on the photos timeline. i shoulda realized that. brain fart.

  71. Greta Garbo...

    She never said:

  75. What did you guys do for her to hate me so much?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Guilt by association, I suppose. I was a regular commenter for a while, then all of a sudden cut off. I'm always well behaved, so I guess I had the smell of Liz on me.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yeah, it was Liz! I knew it. What ever SHE did got us in trouble. They really don't have anything new worth reading lately anyways. I don't want to be another turd in the catbox anyways.
